Abstract


Objectives: Gangneung city has requested a precise epidemiological research due to abnonnal teeth development such as mottled teeth or corrosion tooth caused in some parts of Sachoen-myeon, Gangneung city. The objective of this research is to find out whether such phenomenon of this regional abnormal teeth development is dental fluorosis, find a concrete factors that are casing this, and the scale of damage in order to find a solution.

Methods: Dental fluorosis tests were performed by an trained inspector from December 12, 2006 to January 23, 2007 through using dental mirror and explorer under natural light. 114 students from S elementary in Sachoen-myeon, Gangneung city as well as 67 residents of the comnunity who has been supplied the same drinlung water as the students by the same water supply facility as reported in the media were examined. During the examination, information related to date of birth, gender, residential district, types of drinking water, types of rice water, as well as residential period asked through interview investigation. Results retrieved froin the interview were encoded and put through a statistics program (SPSS 12.0 for Windows, SPSS Inc, USA) and analyzed. By analyzing established reports such as the quality of community water recorded in the Gangneung city and the sample drinking water which was examined by using ColorimeterTMI1 (Hach Co, USA), we were able to confirm the level of fluoride concentration in the community water supply.

Results: The cause of abnormal teeth development was due to excess consumption of fluoride and the supply of excess fluoride consumption came froin the community water supply facility. According to study of 18 minors, the ratio came out to be : normal (27.8%), questionable (5.6%), very mild (1 1.1%), mild (16.7%), moderate (27.8%), severe (11.1%). The excess supply of fluoride has continued since the development of the community water supply facility in the year 1995 till 2006. The level of fluoride concentration of the supplied water is estimated to be 5.7-7.4 times (8.6- 11.1 mgl 1 ) higher than the baseline (1.5 mgl 1 ).

Conclusions: The community water system has to be closed in Sachoen-myeon, Gangneung city because excess consumption of fluoride and the supply of excess fluoride consumption came fi-om the community water supply facility. The managers in charge of administrating the quality of water should be given ail opportunity of educations on the effects of fluoride on human body. Equip an administration system that, upon detecting excess supply of fluoride, perform precise examination and take immediate action and a need for a system where the community water system administration committee can receive the results on the water test.
